Cadmus staff collaborated with the Boston Green Ribbon Commission and Harvard University Office for Sustainability to compile a roadmap for potential renewable energy purchasers attempting to navigate the complex and ever-changing renewables landscape.
This paper responds to the growing interest of America’s institutions and businesses in purchasing renewable energy by offering guidance about the different renewable energy procurement options that are available, their tradeoffs, and which “green claims” they offer to buyers.
This guidance document can:
- Help businesses and institutions better understand the mechanics and implications of popular renewable energy purchasing options from the perspectives of renewable energy capacity, global greenhouse gas emissions, and financial considerations.
- Provide a framework for analyzing and prioritizing these different (and often competing) options.
- Provide institutions with the information and resources to communicate clearly and transparently about their purchases.
Read the addendum to this guide for detailed guidance to institutions considering how to conduct emissions impact analyses associated with procurement decisions.
