As the use of electric vehicles increases, and it becomes increasingly important to smartly manage energy consumption, states are looking at ways to utilize managed charging tools and technologies. Cadmus, with support from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), analyzed electric vehicle (EV) charge management technologies, vehicle grid integration (VGI) measures, current EV market penetration in the United States and worldwide, and expected load shifting due to implementation of VGI programs and policies.
The new paper Managed Charging for Electric Vehicles describes managed charging scenarios in New York and explores how various measures can be used to promote smart management of EV charging loads.
To complete this assessment, Cadmus modeled the effects of managed charging to illustrate the potential impact of vehicles on electric load in New York State. Maximizing the effects of managed charging to enable flexible loads demonstrates how program design decisions can influence the impact EVs have on the electric grid.
