Cadmus-Supported EPA Watershed Index Tool Selected as a Top 30 Finalist for the 2015 ACT-IAC Igniting Innovation Award
Waltham, Mass., January 28, 2015—The Cadmus Group, Inc. (Cadmus) announced today that the Watershed Index tool that it developed in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been selected as one of the American Council for Technology-Industry Advisory Council’s (ACT-IAC’s) Top 30 finalists for the 2015 Igniting Innovation Award. Cadmus associate Andy Somor, the technical leader on the tool’s development, will be on hand with EPA to demonstrate and explain its application at the Igniting Innovation Showcase and Award event on February 5, 2015 in Washington, D.C. A winner will be selected from among the finalists by showcase attendees.
The Igniting Innovation Award was created by the ACT-IAC Institute for Innovation to highlight innovative information technology products and services to improve government. Finalists for ACT-IAC’s 2015 Igniting Innovation Awards Program were selected from a diverse pool of solutions, tools, services, and programs developed by government and industry leaders to address some of the government’s biggest IT challenges.
The Watershed Index tool supports federal, state, and local partners in their efforts to prioritize where to invest the limited resources available for watershed restoration and protection. Cadmus supported the EPA Office of Water and EPA Region 4 Watershed Index project by developing a user-friendly application to set up watershed priority screenings and create graphical representations of the results.
Tens of thousands of water bodies across the United States are classified by the EPA as “impaired”—too polluted or otherwise degraded to meet established water quality standards. The Watershed Index tool allows state agencies and local partners to measure multiple ecological, stressor, and social context indicators associated with the likelihood that a restoration effort may succeed for each individual watershed.
“This tool allows scientists, managers, and other decision makers to easily create and view maps, charts, and tables that that provide valuable information and data to inform decisions that will translate into actionable results for their individual watersheds,” said Cadmus principal Laura Blake, director of Cadmus’ watershed science and management team. “This means that watershed managers and local stakeholders can maximize the time and resources that actually go toward protecting and restoring our nation’s watersheds.”
Cadmus offers a unique combination of qualifications in hydrology, ecology, planning, and environmental data analysis to develop novel and practical watershed management solutions that address environmental challenges on the local, state, and national scales.
