New Alliance Helps City, County Officials Comply with Environmental Mandates

City and county officials scrambling to comply with mandates to improve energy efficiency or water quality or to address a host of other environmental issues now have access to the environmental and energy management services of The Cadmus Group, Inc., one of the nation’s foremost environmental consulting firms. The PTI-Cadmus Group Environmental Alliance delivers Cadmus’ 25 years of environmental expertise to the membership of the Public Technology Institute (PTI), the only technology organization created by and for cities and counties.

“City and county officials suddenly find themselves having to comply with or enforce environmental mandates, and they can turn to us for help,” said Ian Kline, Cadmus president and CEO. “The PTI-Cadmus Group Environmental Alliance offers PTI members and non-members alike an alternative to hiring staff or going through the costly bid-and-proposal process; we’ve already been vetted and approved by PTI.”

Alan R. Shark, PTI executive director, said that the PTI-Cadmus Group Environmental Alliance results from members’ desire for ways to measurably deal with climate change and emission reductions, as well as to address state and local mandates to improve environmental quality through reduced energy use.

“PTI and Cadmus have a long-standing working relationship,” Dr. Shark said. “We respect Cadmus’ expertise, and Cadmus regularly seeks our input in developing programs that meet the needs of our local government audience. The alliance is a natural, evolutionary step.”

One of the benefits of the alliance is that PTI’s members can choose support for a specific program—benchmarking and reducing public buildings’ energy use, state drinking water needs analysis, or the Clean Air Interstate Rule (CAIR)—or they can have the alliance implement a full range of water and energy efficiency programs. They can have the alliance serve as a project manager—planning, implementing and evaluating all phases of a program—or have it perform specific tasks within a larger program.

The PTI-Cadmus Group Environmental Alliance also provides communications and social marketing.

“Some of the more effective ways to achieve energy efficiency or reduce water use involve behavioral change,” Kline said. “Besides engineers and analysts, many of whom are nationally recognized experts in their fields, our staff includes marketing and communications specialists who can help a city or county encourage citizens to adopt environmentally responsible habits.”

Kline said the new alliance offers benefits to Cadmus and to PTI’s members.

“For Cadmus, the alliance introduces us to a largely untapped audience: We can capitalize on PTI’s strength among its membership and contribute to PTI’s 35 years as a leader in technology transfer to local governments,” he said. “Meanwhile, PTI’s members can tap into our energy efficiency, water quality and green building programs, and get measurable results.”
