Cadmus Updates Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory

For the second year in a row, The Cadmus Group, Inc. (Cadmus), a leading environmental and energy consulting firm, has joined other preeminent public and private organizations in voluntarily reporting its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to The Climate Registry.

In 2009 Cadmus’ 11 major facilities discharged the equivalent of 686.7 metric tons of global-warming GHGs, comparable to the emissions from 131 automobiles. Cadmus reported GHG emissions in 2008 only for its Watertown, Mass., headquarters.

“Cadmus works with scores of clients to help them address the environmental impacts of their business activities. Participating in The Climate Registry is a notable example of how seriously Cadmus takes its own corporate social responsibility to do its part by measuring its carbon footprint, having the findings independently verified and publicly reporting the results,” says Jane Obbagy, vice president.

Because the energy use of each Cadmus facility is not measured directly, emissions are calculated based on square footage and adjusted for the mix of fuels used to provide heating, cooling, and electricity to provide lighting and run office equipment.

More than 425 corporate, nonprofit and government entities have voluntarily committed to measure, verify, and publicly report their greenhouse gas emissions to The Registry. Cadmus is a founding member of The Climate Registry.

Having an accurate GHG emissions inventory that meets international standards can not only show environmental leadership, but also be good for business. For example, the federal government may, as early as next year, begin requiring its suppliers to provide information about their carbon footprint, information that may affect government purchasing decisions.

“Membership in The Climate Registry is an excellent way for companies to ensure they have a high-quality, third-party-verified GHG emissions inventory to disclose to the federal government as a condition of doing business with Washington,” says Ms. Obbagy.

“Companies that don’t do business with the federal government can also benefit from Climate Registry membership. Any company that can disclose its GHG emissions with confidence can gain an advantage with commercial customers and consumers who increasingly are seeking “green” companies to provide goods and services,” she adds.
