Mehan Set to Discuss Climate Change’s Impact on Water Resources

Although global climate change’s threats to fresh water resources are well known, potential solutions to those problems are not. To help make sense of the relevant issues, Cadmus Principal G. Tracy Mehan III will join a panel of experts later this month for a 90-minute audioconference on how water quality might be improved and the demand for safe drinking water could be met given the anticipated impacts of global climate change.

Organized by the Bureau of National Affairs Inc. (BNA), “Climate Change, and Sustainability: Challenges and Solutions” will be held on Wednesday, July 22, beginning at 2 p.m. EDT. Among the topics to be covered are the effect of climate change on the water sector and the roles of federal, state and local authorities in developing and implementing responses to the impact of climate change on water resources.

“Whatever its ultimate cause, climate change is a reality that water managers and policy experts must address, Mehan said. “Adaptation is and will be necessary at multiple scales, from the utility to the entire watershed.”

An attorney who has worked in the public and private sectors on natural resources and environmental issues for some two decades, Mehan is an expert in the implementation of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act, including permitting, infrastructure finance, wetlands regulation, and watershed management. Before joining Cadmus, he served as assistant administrator for water at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and as director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Michigan Office of the Great Lakes.

Mehan is a member of the Environmental Law Institute, the Water Environment Federation, the Potomac Conservancy and the Water Science and Technology Board for the National Research Council at the National Academies. He also is an adjunct professor of environmental law at George Mason University School of Law.

Mehan will be joined on the audioconference panel by experts from the American Water Works Association, the Water Policy Institute and private industry. Details and registration information for the audioconference are available on the BNA Web site.
