New Cadmus White Paper: Align Policy With Utility Interests To Encourage Energy Efficiency

Waltham, Mass., June 5, 2014—The Cadmus Group, Inc. (Cadmus) announced today that it was releasing its latest white paper, Finding Common Ground: Utilities & Regulators. In this paper, industry leaders M. Sami Khawaja, Ph.D., Hossein Haeri, Ph.D., and Brian Hedman discuss the policy options confronting the energy-efficiency industry and identify the best opportunities for aligning those policies with utility interest to facilitate adoption of energy efficiency as a utility resource.

The full white paper is available for download or viewing at cadmusgroup.com/commonground.

“Utilities consider a wide range of resources to meet their future needs,” said co-author Hedman. “In this paper, we have outlined the policy changes needed to assure that the use of energy efficiency as a resource is not at a disadvantage to new power generation. Energy-efficient technologies will be more attractive to investors and energy producers if they are deployed with cost-effective approaches and robust measurement of impacts, and if we deal with existing challenges to achieving a balanced earnings potential.”

As a resource, energy efficiency has significant benefits: it lowers costs, reduces fuel price risk, improves system reliability and energy security, creates jobs, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and yields a number of co-benefits, such as increased property values. However, current policies and analytical frameworks have proven punitive to energy efficiency in fundamental areas. Finding Common Ground: Utilities & Regulators explores key considerations and recommendations through which policymakers and utilities—institutions often at odds—can form partnerships, align their goals to everyone’s benefit, and encourage energy efficiency.
