Cadmus Associate Will Help Colleges Move Toward Climate Neutrality

Watertown, Mass. (June 26, 2007) — Cadmus associate Andrea Putman has been named to the Implementation Advisory Committee of the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).

The ACUPCC is a high-visibility effort to gather pledges from institutions of higher education to neutralize their green house gas emissions and accelerate their research and education efforts to equip society to re-stabilize the earth’s climate. The presidents and chancellors of over 300 colleges and universities have signed the Presidents Climate Commitment. The ACUPCC wants to have least 1,000 institutions participating by the end of 2009.

“I am honored to serve on this important committee and have the opportunity to advise higher educations institutions across the United States on how to most effectively and quickly move toward climate neutrality,” Andrea said.

The Implementation Advisory Committee comprises 20 to 25 experts and practitioners experienced in working with emissions reduction activities on campus. It provides guidance to signatories of the Commitment to help them meet their pledges to reduce campus greenhouse gas emissions by:

  • Completing an emissions inventory.
  • Within 2 years, setting a target date and interim milestones for becoming climate neutral.
  • Taking immediate steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by choosing from a list of short-term actions.
  • Integrating sustainability into their curricula and making it part of the educational experience.
  • Making their action plans, inventories, and progress reports available to the public.

Andrea has worked in the energy field for more than 15 years. She is the co-author of The Business Case for Renewable Energy: A Guide for Colleges and Universities, published in May 2006 by National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO). She is writing her second book, Boldly Sustainable: Higher Education and the Challenge of Climate Change, which also will also be published by NACUBO.

Andrea Putman joined Cadmus in September 2006. She works on projects related to higher education for U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR® program, which promotes the use of energy efficient buildings, homes, and products. She is also the higher education sector lead for the Southeast Rebuild Collaborative, a joint effort of the state energy offices of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, and South Carolina that promotes energy efficiency throughout the region. Before joining Cadmus, Andrea owned and operated her own business, Green Innovations, LLC, which provided communications, marketing, and analyses for renewable energy initiatives. She also worked on ENERGY STAR® projects at ICF Consulting and was a senior policy analyst with Aspen Systems Corporation.
