Cadmus Buys 15% of Electricity from Green Sources
Watertown, Mass. June 6, 2007 — The Cadmus Group, Inc., a leading environmental and energy consulting firm, has purchased 75 thousand kilowatt hours of electricity, 15 percent of the electricity it uses annually, from renewable sources. The company recently bought renewable energy certificates (RECs) for electricity that will come from new landfill gas generators in New England. This purchase will eliminate an estimated 35 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
“Our commitment to renewable energy sources is the latest example of how we strive to promote environmental protection, not only in the work we do, but also in how we run our business,” said Cadmus president Ian Kline. “Electricity generation is a significant source of air pollution and greenhouse gases nationwide, but promoting renewable sources helps reduce the environmental impacts related to energy production. And it helps drive down the cost of renewable energy over the long term, making it more accessible to businesses and individuals alike and increasing its benefits to the environment.”
As part of its program to purchase renewable energy, Cadmus joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership, a voluntary program whose goals include facilitating the growth of the green power market by reducing the cost and increasing the value of green power. (Green power is a term for electricity generated from environmentally preferable renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, biogas, and low-impact hydro.) A strong green power market will support new, clean technologies that will reduce the environmental impacts of electricity generation.
The RECs Cadmus purchased qualifies the company for participation in the Clean Energy Choice® program. The program will match the value of our purchase in a contribution to the town of Watertown, where our headquarters is located. The town can use that money for a renewable energy project, such as the installation of photovoltaic cells or the establishment of a renewable energy education program. The Clean Energy Choice program is a project of the Renewable Energy Trust at the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC), a Cadmus client since 2002.
