Tracy Mehan Joins National Research Council’s Water Science and Technology Board

Watertown, Mass. (July 8, 2007) — G. Tracy Mehan III, a principal of The Cadmus Group, Inc. (Cadmus) and former assistant administrator for water at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has been appointed to the Water Science and Technology Board (WSTB) of The National Academies’ National Research Council (NRC) in Washington, D.C. His 3-year term begins this month.

“I am very honored to join the WSTB and assist it in advising public agencies and private actors on implementing integrated watershed management of the waters of the United States for the benefit of the people and wildlife which depend upon them,” said Mehan. “The challenges of an expanding economy, a growing population, increasing water demand, climate variability, and the loss of habitat demand the best possible science and policy if we are to reconcile environmental quality with economic growth.”

Created in 1982, the WSTB is a multidisciplinary group of experts available to advise the government and the nation on water resources issues. Members serve for staggered 3-year terms and come from universities, government, industry, and other organizations.

The WSTB is a unit of the NRC, which is the operating arm of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine. These organizations are known collectively as the National Academies, the most important independent scientific advisory group available to the U.S. government. Mehan currently is a member of the NRC’s Committee on the Mississippi River and the Clean Water Act, which will issue its final report later this fall.

Mehan joined Cadmus in 2004 after a 15-year career managing federal and state environmental and natural resources agencies, including the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the Michigan Office of the Great Lakes, and EPA’s Office of Water where he was in charge of both the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Programs. He also served as associate deputy administrator at the EPA in 1992 and as environmental stewardship counselor to the G-8 Summit Planning Organization in 2004. A graduate of Saint Louis University School of Law, Mehan is an adjunct professor of environmental law at George Mason University School of Law.
