New York State has set ambitious climate goals, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) by 85% from 1990 levels by 2050. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority sought to understand potential pathways towards reducing transportation sector emissions and identify opportunities and barriers related to deployment of clean transportation operations for light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles, rail, marine and aviation.
We integrated baseline market research, transportation sector modeling, stakeholder engagement, policy and investment analysis, and distribution system pressure testing. For EV and EVSE adoption modeling, the team built bottom-up estimates of technology adoption rates based on market diffusion modeling. We developed an interactive GIS tool to visualize EV adoption across varying spatial and temporal scales and developed scenarios to reflect inherent uncertainty in market trends over time. The platform estimates EV and EVSE diffusion over time, load and peak demand impacts, GHG emission, customer economics, and economic development impacts.
The NYSERDA Clean Transportation Roadmap laid the groundwork for significant investment at the state level for EV programs and projects, including the state’s $1 billion make-ready incentive program.
